What You Need to Know About CV/Resume Parsers

What does a typical resume parser do?

A typical parser takes the information from a resume or CV, analyzes it, and transforms unstructured data into a structured format. This formatted data can then be stored in a company or recruiter’s applicant tracking system or database. Candidates see this in action when applying for jobs and their resume documents are converted into fields in an online application on a company’s website.

How is Sovren’s parser different?

What sets Sovren’s software apart is that our resume parser understands resumes just like a human would. Traditional artificial intelligence software knows things are related but doesn’t understand how or what these things mean. Our software is radically different because it has the same understanding as a human and gets the same results a human would. It understands what the data means and what the data’s values are.

For instance, let’s say a job candidate was an Executive Assistant to a CEO. With traditional AI software that relies solely on keywords, this candidate would show up in the results for a CEO search. Our parser, on the other hand, understands that this candidate is an EA, not a CEO, so our search software can find exact matches, not just keywords.

Our parser also understands the context and timeframe of a candidates’ skills and experience, while traditional AI software can only tell you if a skill is listed on a candidate’s resume. Semantic AI like Sovren’s matching engine (companion software to our parsers) will give you the best candidates and will rate someone who has used the skill recently higher than someone who used the same skill years ago.

We’re not changing the hiring process; we’re automating it with human intelligence.

How is parsed data used?

Typically, parsed data is stored so it can then be searched or matched. Then recruiters will use software to search parsed data for specific keywords or terms, such as a job title or skill. A recruiter can also take a job description, parse it, and then use other software to search for candidates already in the company’s database.

But the data must be parsed accurately for these types of searches to be effective.

Why are CV/resume parsers important for job seekers?

If your resume can’t be understood by a machine, it may never be seen by a human! Job seekers should craft resumes with the right keywords in mind and in appropriate formats. Unique, one-off resumes are usually hard for both recruiters and parsers to read and understand.

For example, in one resume that wasn’t parsing well, a candidate listed jobs he told us covered 20 years of experience. However, he didn’t include any dates with his positions! That resulted in the parser not accurately calculating how many years of experience he has (a human wouldn’t have been able to either, because the dates were completely missing). Candidates need to keep these details in mind so their resumes will be interpreted in the way they intend.

Why are parsers important for recruiters/HR teams?

If you’re a recruiter or global company, your needs are complex. You have hundreds of job openings, thousands of resumes, and you’re working with multiple languages. You need a parser that can handle that level of complexity and parse the information in candidates’ resumes accurately, efficiently, and in a format you can use – and do it 1,000 times faster and more cost effectively than humans.

Some employers have said up to 75% of applicants for a job opening are not qualified for that position. You could hire a human to read and judge each applicant, or you could use a parser that can analyze these resumes so much faster, and you could use Sovren’s AI matching software to sort and score each candidate.
